Rich grew up in New Hyde Park and was a member of the 1984 New Hyde Park Memorial H.S. NY State Championship football team.  He also attended Milford Academy in Connecticut where he was a Consensus All-American.  Rich attended the University of Maryland on full scholarship and graduated in 1990.
